The Victorian Urological Nurses Education Foundation invites you to its inaugural Advances in Urology Seminar 2025. 

The event’s primary objective is to educate urology nurses, allied health professionals, medical practitioners, specialists, researchers and industry experts in a collaborative manner. We will exchange knowledge, discuss emerging trends and explore innovative approaches in urology so we can all continue to deliver excellent patient care.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts through presentations of current and common topics on various urological conditions and their management. There will also be an opportunity to engage with industry during morning tea with a trade exhibition on offer.

Topics including Robotic surgery, surgical treatments for BPH, bladder cancer and renal stone disease will be covered. Expert nurses will be presenting their perspectivse on prostate cancer management and erectile dysfunction.  

Tickets are available now. These events have been fully subscribed in the past so we recommend getting in early to avoid missing out.

SPEAKERS

Indra Jolayemi

INDRA JOLAYEMI

Indra is the founder of ‘Advances in Urology Seminar’ with the first seminar held in 2010. She currently works at Casey Hospital Operating Theatre and Victorian Heart Hospital as Clinical Nurse Specialist. Indra is an associate sessional teacher at Monash University, Nursing & Midwifery Faculty.
She graduated as a registered nurse in 1991 in Malaysia and since then has been working as an operating theatre nurse in various roles including ANUM in Urology, Operating Theatre Procurement Manager, and Clinical Coach. She has worked at internationally renowned hospitals such as the Charing Cross Hospital (Hammersmith NHS Trust) and the Queen Elizabeth NHS Trust at Woolwich Arsenal, London. She obtained diploma in preceptor & mentorship in practice Greenwich University, London, Completed Postgraduate Diploma in Perioperative Nursing from Thames Valley University London and La Trobe University, Melbourne. She studied Bachelor of Law (University of London External) and graduated with LLB. Hons. She is currently completing Masters in Perioperative Nursing at La Trobe University. She is published with an article for the ACORN, Journal of Perioperative Nursing, on innovation in nursing and short articles in nursing for Victorian Perioperative Nurses Group Snippets.  She has presented at international conferences for innovation in nursing (USANZ 2014) & Malaysian Urological Association Conference (2021) on Radiation Safety in Operating Theatre (Guide to Best Practice). She has been a panel speaker at Operating theatre Leaderships Conference in Sydney (2023).
Her other special achievements include being the inventor/redesigned sterile surgical drape for modified PCNL procedure which is used at various Victorian hospitals.  She has volunteered as part of the medical visiting team (Urology) for 12 years with The Global Health, Pacific Island Program to Tonga (RACS/Australia Aid).  She is currently volunteering with Pasifika Medical Association to Tonga.
Her main passion is education, research and clinical excellence. She is actively involved with the Education Committee with the Victorian Perioperative Nurses Group. She has helped to develop the career pathway for perioperative nurses for the VPNG website.  She has received recognition for excellent nursing innovation in 2014 from ANZUNS. She has also been nominated several times at Monash Nursing and Midwifery Awards 2022 – Nursing Innovation, 2014 – Leadership, 2011 – Excellent Service, 2010 – Future Emerging Leader. She was recipient of recognition and reward award 2011 for outstanding demonstration of ICARE value for Integrity.

 

Dr Shekib Shahbaz

DR SHEKIB SHAHBAZ
MBBS (Hons), Dip Surg Anat, FRACS (Urol)

Dr Shekib Shahbaz is Melbourne Urology Centre Director and Cofounder. He is past supervisor of urology training at Monash Health. He grew up in Southeast Melbourne and graduated from school at the top of his year. He gained entry to Monash University Medical School with two scholarships and completing his undergraduate medical degree with Honors. He spent the next four years at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for basic surgical training. During this time, He completed a Diploma in surgical anatomy at The University of Melbourne whilst tutoring as an anatomy demonstrator. Dr Shekib Shahbaz completed four years of advances urological training in New South Wales before returning to Monash Health in Melbourne for a further fellowship year. He subsequently stayed on as a Consultant Urologist at Monash Health. He has had further sub-specialty training in numerous centres of excellence across Europe. United States and Asia. Shekib is actively involved in teaching, research, and ongoing personal professional development. He has widely travelled and has lived in numerous countries. His compassionate approach and cultural awareness sees him well liked by patients of all ages and backgrounds.

 

Mr George Koufogiannis

MR GEORGE KOUFOGIANNIS

Mr George Koufogiannis completed his medical training at the University of Sydney.  His post graduate qualifications were gained in Victoria and NSW, culminating in the award of FRACS (Urology).
George completed his years of advanced training concentrating on urological cancers with focus on minimally invasive surgical techniques.  In addition, George has extensive training on male voiding dysfunction, laser prostate surgery and stone surgery.  His fellowship year was centred on advanced laparoscopy, implant surgery and open complex urological cancers.  His post fellowship training has been in world renowned centres in robotic surgery, USC in California and Asian University in Seoul, Korea.
George is actively involved in teaching the next generation of surgeons and is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeon’s Academy of Surgical Educators.  He also consistently participates in multidisciplinary team meetings, audit, radiology and morbidity meetings.
Special interest areas:
•    Robotic surgery: upper and lower tract
•    Voiding dysfunction including laser prostate surgery, Urolift and rezum
•    Implant, continence surgery and urodynamics
•    All aspects of general urology: laser stone surgery, vasectomy, circumcision
 

Dr Tony De Sousa

DR TONY DE SOUSA
MBBS (Hons), FRACS (Urol)

Melbourne Urology Centre Director and co-founder Dr Tony de Sousa is a Melbourne-trained Urologist specialising in the treatment of kidney stones, laparoscopic and robotic cancer surgery, and minimally invasive treatments for prostate enlargement (BPH). He provides the highest standard of individualised, patient-focused care, with clear communication, a caring approach and attention to detail.
ony grew up in Kilmore in regional Victoria and continues to provide a visiting service to the local community there. He graduated from Monash University Medical School with Honours and was awarded the Queen Victoria Medical Prize. In 2010, as Research Fellow with the Prostate and Breast Cancer Research Program at Monash University, he received The Marshall Prize in surgical training from Monash University/Southern Health for his role in prostate cancer research. In 2013 he was awarded the prestigious prize for best research paper at the Urological Society’s Victorian State Meeting.

 

Dr Munad Khan

Dr Munad Khan
MBBS, B Med Sc, FRACS (Urol)

Dr Munad Khan is a well-travelled Australian trained urologist with a particular interest in robotic surgery. He holds a position at Monash Health as a consultant urologist and is actively involved in teaching urology trainees.
Munad grew up in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne and undertook medical school at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 2012. His junior years in medical training were undertaken at the Austin Hospital which included a variety of opportunities rotating through rural Victoria and Tasmania. He commenced specialty training in 2018 in Queensland, working in regional and metropolitan centres before returning to Victoria for his final year at Monash Health. Following this, he undertook a yearlong fellowship in robotic surgery in the Northwest of England, gaining valuable experience in advanced techniques as well as optimizing the patient journey through their entire hospital stay.

Mandy McCalman is a dedicated Coloplast Men’s Health Nurse Specialist. She has worked in urology since 2013 and have helped hundreds of men experiencing erectile dysfunction.

KATE SLADE

Kate is a PCFA supported Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse based at Monash Health's Moorabbin Hospital.  Kate has been working in cancer care for 17 years, within various areas of medical oncology at Monash Health as a Clinical Nurse Specialist before moving to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as a Clinical Research Nurse.  Kate has been working as a Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse within the Urology unit at Monash Health since 2018, where she set up the PCSN service alongside the Casey Hospital PCSN.
