Death Cafe with Bonita Ralph - 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm - FREE - Bookings essential

Death Cafe is a global movement whose purpose is normalising conversation about death and helping people make the most of their finite lives.

Led by Bonita Ralph, a holistic Funeral Director at Natural Grace funerals, attendees will be supported to have their say (or just listen) on a topic that is often taboo or spoken about in hushed tones.

Please note Death Cafe is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

This event is run by the Library and must be booked separately through their website.

FEATURED ARTISTS

Vivian Qiu – Sentimental Rice Jewellery

During COVID-19, Vivian Qiu explored jewellery design as a way of self-discovery and self-healing. In the drop-in workshop, Vivian will guide you to reflect on your meaningful memories and feelings, and create jewellery with rice fabric.

The creation of rice fabric was inspired by her Chinese culture. When she was sick as a kid, her mum would make her plain rice congee. It’s a comforting and healing food. Rice fabric is the essence of the self-healing design journey. It is crispy and crunchy, and smells of natural rice aroma.

About Vivian Qiu:  Vivian Qiu is a sentimental jewellery designer and teaching artist with a fashion design background. Her jewellery practice focuses on reflective design based on sentiment, memory and cultural identity. She makes materials for her own jewellery and artwork, such as rice fabric and rice clay.

Her Sentimental Rice Jewellery project has been presented as part of Melbourne Fashion Festival and Melbourne Design Week 2021. She has also collaborated with organisations and museums to deliver interactive workshops, such as Signal, City of Melbourne, Immigration Museum, RMIT First Site Gallery and Geelong Wool Museum. She has exhibited her work in the online exhibition ‘Rendering: jewellery and objects’ as part of Radiant Pavilion 2021.

Vivian has worked as an artist in residence at McKinnon Secondary College as part of 6-month Creative Workers in Schools program initiated by Regional Arts Victoria in 2021. She continues to research and develop educational programs focusing on cultural identities and well-being.
