PHOTO 2021: Submit your video for our Warhol inspired screen tests

Join us on Sunday 21 February as we present The 13 Most Beautiful… Songs for Andy Warhol Screen Tests as part of the PHOTO 2021 Festival.

Over the next few months we will be asking the public to submit their own Andy Warhol inspired screen tests, adopting the same filming techniques as Warhol did during this series he developed at the Factory in the 1960s. We will then collect these video works so we can present them in a special presentation immediately after The 13 Most Beautiful… Songs for Andy Warhol Screen Tests.  

How to set up your own Warhol inspired Screen Test 

1. Choose a neutral backdrop like a plain wall or curtain 
2. If possible, use natural lighting to light your subject. Alternatively set up your own lighting using lamps to capture the facial features. Warhol experimented with various lighting techniques so there is no hard and fast rule, but it is important that the audience is able to see the subject.  
3. Place the camera in landscape position (horizontal).  
4. Place the camera on a steady surface. A tripod is ideal, but otherwise if the camera is sitting on something solid then that is fine. Avoid hand-held camera.  
5. Focus the camera on the subject’s face. If you are creating a self-portrait use an object about the size and position of where your head will be to get your focus, then place yourself in the position where the object was.  
6. Press record.  
7. Film the subject for 3 minutes. Make sure the subject is not moving about too much in the frame.  
8. Stop the recording. That’s it! We will add special effects to make the video seems like it was shot with a 16mm Bolex camera on black and white film. Here’s some examples from the Warhol Museum.
