About your teaching artist – Nimisha Nimkar
My love for pottery began as child watching potters making pots using traditional methods and equipment in the villages of India.
The inter-woven and intricate connection between humans and nature has always fascinated me. Both constituting the five elements Earth, Water, Fire Air, Space. Both experiencing the transitory existence.
Working with clay epitomises these elements beautifully. Clay represents Earth, Water is used to shape the clay. Air dries the clay form. Fire turns it into a stone like object and Space is in the new form now created. Thus, making it a perfect confluence of the basic elements of the hands, mind, heart, and soul of the Artist.
My work showcases my spiritual journey and influence of my culture and heritage. I am particularly fascinated by the old scripts, the geometric forms and patterns found in folk art in India. I use these drawings as a source of my inspiration to create my forms incorporating different techniques and style.
