Art Bites: Naina Sen - Artist Talk and Viewing of The Song Keepers

In the cooler months join us at Bunjil Place for Art Bites, a monthly series of art talks exploring creative topics inspired by the Bunjil Place art and digital programs. Accompanied by tasty treats, delicious drinks and meet like-minded folks at this relaxed talks series.

In the May edition of Art Bites spend an evening with filmmaker and artist Naina Sen, whose digital artwork is exhibiting throughout May on the Digital Wall and on the Outdoor Screen. At the end of the talk we will be presenting her film, The Song Keepers.

Naina Sen

Born and brought up in New Delhi, India, Naina Sen is a Walkley and AACTA nominated filmmaker and video artist. Based on the lands of the Larrakia People in Darwin, Naina has worked extensively with remote Aboriginal communities in North-East Arnhem Land and the Central Desert in the Northern Territory for the last 12 years. Working across documentary, installation and projection, Naina explores gender and cultural identity and equity, privileging First Nations and Southeast Asian narratives.

The Song Keepers

In the obscure churches of remote Central Australia, a hidden musical legacy of ancient Aboriginal languages, sacred poetry and baroque music is being preserved by four generations of song women who make up the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir. Against all odds and with the help of their charismatic conductor, the choir embarks on a historic tour of Germany to take back the hymns that were given to their great grandparents by German missionaries, now sung in their own Aboriginal languages. Together they share their music and stories of cultural survival, identity and cross-cultural collaboration. Come on an adventure as the unlikeliest band on earth goes on tour to the other side of the world!
