This month, we continue our exploration of the artistic alphabet with Memories, Newspaper, Origami and Pacita Abad.

As markers of time, both art objects and newspapers capture the thoughts, ideas and sentiment of a particular moment, whether that moment is one shared publicly or experienced privately.

Join us this August for a hands-on making workshop as we explore notions of memory and the capture of time through art and printed mediums. Inspired by the work of artist Pacita Abad, and guided by teaching artist Yaz Gaté, enjoy two-hours of art making using papers, card and origami folding techniques to craft your own paper vase. Each participant will imbue their vase with memory through drawings and decoration, a private moment for you to reflect on what moments are meaningful to you.

Suitable for ages 18+. No previous experience required.

Materials and light refreshments provided.

About your teaching artist

Melbourne-based Yaz Gaté, née del Mar, is founder of Tiny Cupboard Creatives - a small enterprise providing exciting in studio and virtual classes, workshops and events for learners of all ages, as well as commissioned artwork and creative collaborations with other artists and organisations such as The TarraWarra Museum of Art, The City of Greater Dandenong, Glen Eira Council, Linden New Arts and the Philippine Embassy of Australia.

Yaz specialises in canvas and digital art but has a wide practice that includes textiles and sewing, lino printing and drawing. She has a strong interest in botanicals, their connection to cultural identity and the way culture and life stories shape art making. Over the last 4 years, she has drawn on her own Filipino Australian background to explore the way migration and family can impact storytelling in art. Yaz typically uses bold black lines and vibrant colour palette making her work distinctive.
