At this month’s Wednesday Night Workshop, we will combine technology, art and language for a playful workshop creating visual poems.

As we continue our exploration of an artistic alphabet, we will experiment with technology and ultraviolet light to create visual poems.

Over the course of two hours, and under the guidance of teaching artist Yaz Gaté, participants will learn about contemporary artists working in the visual poetry and technology space, and spend time creating their own visual poem.

This playful and experimental workshop will see participants generate a poem using AI technology, and then create a layered artwork incorporating imagery, abstracted shapes and text using invisible inks, fluorescent paint and paint pens.

Attendees will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, snacks and drinks and opportunities to meet like-minded people.

About your teaching artist

Melbourne-based Yaz Gaté, née del Mar, is founder of Tiny Cupboard Creatives - a small enterprise providing exciting in studio and virtual classes, workshops and events for learners of all ages, as well as commissioned artwork and creative collaborations with other artists and organisations such as The Tarra Warra Museum of Art, The City of Greater Dandenong, Glen Eira Council, Linden New Arts and the Philippine Embassy of Australia.

Yaz specialises in canvas and digital art but has a wide practice that includes textiles and sewing, lino printing and drawing. She has a strong interest in botanicals, their connection to cultural identity and the way culture and life stories shape art making. Over the last 4 years, she has drawn on her own Filipino Australian background to explore the way migration and family can impact storytelling in art. Yaz typically uses bold black lines and vibrant colour palette making her work distinctive.

Suitable for those aged 18+. No previous experience required. Light refreshments and materials provided.
