Award-winning reporter Louise Milligan speaks with Patricia Karvelas about her powerful and deeply troubling exposé of how the legal system handles sexual assault trials.

The culmination of five years of research, journalist Louise Milligan’s Witness exposes the devastating effects of an adversarial legal system that can be sexist, callous and too often weighted towards the rich and powerful. Building on her Walkley–winning reportage on abuse in the Catholic Church, the book presents a wider critique of sexual assault trials in courts of law. Milligan speaks with Patricia Karvelas about her powerful and deeply troubling exposé that was shortlisted for this year’s Stella Prize and voted People’s Choice at the 2021 Victorian Premier Literary Awards.

Louise Milligan is the bestselling author of the Walkley Award-winning Cardinal: The Rise and Fall of George Pell. Her latest highly acclaimed book, Witness, explores the brutal treatment of victims in the criminal justice system, and was awarded the People’s Choice Award at the 2021 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.
